Wise Words: Cautionary Tips About Training

Finding a qualified trainer that works for you and your pup can be tricky, but it’s not impossible. You just need to know what to look for and what to avoid. Here are just a few things to steer clear of when hiring a trainer.

Training Red Flags:

  • The trainer rushes to insist that your dog must be on a certain type of equipment regardless of the issue you are dealing with and before evaluating your pup
    • Red Flag! Dogs are individuals and should be treated as such. A good trainer will always assess your dog and their individual needs before determining what equipment and techniques should be used.
  • The trainer guarantees that they can “fix” your dog
    • Red Flag! There are no guarantees when it comes to behavior. The environment the dog is in, the humans they live with, and their individual temperament are all factors in the overall picture and will influence the outcome of any training protocol.

Remember that once you have hired a trainer, you are still your dog’s best advocate. No one knows your pooch like you do. Avoid letting the trainer do anything with your dog you aren’t comfortable with, or if you see your dog’s behavior regressing, talk with your trainer about changing the plan. You’ll know by their willingness to pivot their process to cater to your dog’s needs if they are a keeper or not. If they aren’t willing to, it’s best to part ways and find another trainer.
