Foods Dogs Should Avoid

Dogs are curious and some have a tendency to “get into things.” From finding a scooby snack on your walk to nabbing a nibble that’s fallen from the kitchen counter, it’s good to know exactly what’s harmful to your dog and what to do when it happens.

Foods your pooch should avoid and their symptoms

  • Onions and garlic can lead to anemia and RBC damage
  • Caffeine can lead to elevated blood pressure and cardiac arrhythmias
  • Chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures
  • Raw eggs, meats, and bones can lead to diarrhea and bacterial gastroenteritis such as salmonella/ E coli
  • Macadamia nuts can lead to weakness, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia
  • Grapes/raisins can lead to acute kidney injury
  • Dairy can lead to vomiting and diarrhea, as many dogs are lactose intolerant
  • Xylitol, which is often used as a sweetener in gum, candy, baked goods, and toothpaste, will cause insulin release leading to low sugar levels and, eventually, liver failure
  • Yeast dough will rise in the belly and cause gas to accumulate, which can lead to bloat with the stomach twisting
